On the Edge of Rising Water

2025-12-10 · Prachuap Khiri Khan, Canada

The sea hits harder today. Waves explode over the seawall with a force and height I haven’t seen before. At one point the road floods and I’m suddenly trapped. It happens so quickly — I wasn’t paying attention, too busy chasing the next giant wave with my camera, convinced the biggest one was still coming.

The water isn’t deep, not yet, so I slip off my sandals and hurry toward the dry patch of pavement ahead. Only then do the thoughts begin to catch up.

What if the waves keep growing — just a little more each time the tides are high and the winds are strong? It feels like a quiet warning. A recipe for disaster, not unlike the extreme rains in Hat Yai, only 650 km south of Prachuap, where more than a hundred people lost their lives just days ago.

Maybe it’s time to start chasing gentler phenomena for a while.

What subtle — or not so subtle — shifts make you pause these days?
