Creatures of Contradiction

Some things ignite fear. Others spark fascination. And then there are the ones that reveal our own contradictions. I’m afraid of plenty of things in this world — but snakes have never been one of them, which still feels a little strange even to me.
At the Snake Farm in Bangkok, this contrast became almost comical. There I was, completely at ease with a python wrapped around my shoulders — surprised only by how light this enormous creature felt, how warm its skin was, and how wrong my old assumptions had been. Nothing cold, slimy, or slippery. Just strength, warmth, and quiet presence.
Meanwhile, show me a tiny spider and I’ll exit the room faster than the snake could blink. Put me near water deeper than my ankles? No thanks. Yet send me soaring into the sky in a small plane or under a paraglider wing, and I’m thrilled. That’s me in a nutshell: a creature of extremes and contradiction.
But back to the show.
The snakes were mesmerizing, but it was the handlers who truly fascinated me. From the audience it all looked playful and effortless, almost like a dance. But when you watch more closely, you see the real story: total focus, unwavering attention, and the ability to read every subtle movement of the animal. Not affection — that’s not part of the snake–human equation — but deep respect, and a kind of mutual awareness that felt more honest than many human interactions.
These are my contradictions.
